Atkins diet: how is it used for weight loss?

Carbohydrates

The Atkins diet reduces carbohydrate intake, especially in the first phase, and allows you to eat protein and fat in normal amounts. More than 40 years ago, Dr. Robert Atkins created this diet, which still has many followers around the world who are looking for a way to lose weight quickly without feeling hungry.

In this article, we are going to tell what are the different phases of the Atkins diet and what foods are allowed.

What is the Atkins diet?

As I anticipated, the Atkins diet is a type of diet very similar to the ketogenic diet, where protein and fat are prioritized over carbohydrates.

Some people decide to follow this diet for health reasons, most do it to lose weight. In this article, I am going to tell you what it consists of and how to carry it out, but first I would like to make some clear points:

  • Carbohydrates are not bad or by taking them it is true that we are not going to lose weight.
  • If what motivates you about this diet is to get quick results to lose weight, my experience says that surely this will not work out.
  • You can also lose weight by eating a “normal” and balanced diet.
  • You should not follow a diet at your own risk and without the approval of a professional who knows your case and recommends it.
  • Pasta or other carbohydrates are not fattening as such, rather it is about consuming them in the right proportions. The WHO recognizes these as the main source of human energy.
  • The Atkins diet can be an interesting resource for people who need to lose weight quickly for health reasons.
  • However, drastic weight losses are usually associated with a rebound effect, therefore, if we are not overweight, it is not something that I would recommend.

How does the Atkins diet work?

This diet reduces the consumption of carbohydrates, so the body is forced to use the fat it has stored as an energy source, which leads to rapid weight loss.

For this reason, according to the Atkins diet, carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread, potatoes or pasta should not be eaten.

Thus, the first phase of the Atkins diet brings the body into a state of ketosis.

The new approach to this diet is more permissive and includes some vegetables, fruits, and some grains. However, the amount allowed at each stage must be respected.

Atkins diet benefits

Many studies have shown that this diet is a great option for weight loss compared to other diets. In the first few months, in particular, it is possible to lose a lot of weight.

However, many people have not been able to fully comply with all the discipline required by the associated restrictions. After several months on the Atkins diet, the participants in these studies have regained weight, as a result of the rebound effect and how difficult it is to maintain a lifestyle based on this type of diet.

Cons of the Atkins Diet

Some experts and nutritionists consider that it is an unbalanced form of a diet since very little fruit, vegetables, and fiber are consumed but a lot of fat and protein. It can cause a shortage of vitamins, phytochemicals, and fibers. Although vitamin supplements are recommended in phase I, this does not mean that it is a healthy and balanced diet.

Another downside is that the Atkins diet quit rate is very high. Many people have a strong desire to eat carbohydrates, especially in phase I.

Although the Atkins diet allows you to lose weight successfully, it is always advisable to consult a doctor or nutritionist to avoid any possible health problems due to the high carbohydrate restriction that this diet offers.
